5 things to do before the baby arrivesDave Smith
Preparing for a baby can be overwhelming for new parents. The list of “pending tasks” seems endless, the list of suggested items for registration is suspiciously long, the car seat is impossible to install and the perfect color of the nursery is difficult to reach. It can be difficult to prioritize which projects are really important.
And always, at the bottom of your head, there is the persistent uncertainty of not knowing when exactly this little human is really going to leave your body.
They adopted my youngest son, and we only had 24 hours notice before bringing him home. Then, from personal experience, I can testify that you can really stop at Target and take some diapers, a formula and a crib on the way home from the hospital: those essentials are enough to keep your baby alive.
But for those of you with a little more time to prepare, this is what I recommend that you concentrate:
- Install the car seat
You must have a car seat before you can leave the hospital. Buying car seats can be confusing and difficult to install. If you have questions about the facilities, contact your local police station or fire station for a security check. I recommend that you buy and install a seat before 35 weeks in case the baby escapes a few weeks before. In fact, it is a good idea to have all your projects completed before 35 weeks so you have more time for tip # 5.
- Learn child CPR
If you are not yet certified for CPR, taking a CPR class can give you a higher level of confidence in your upbringing and could save your baby’s life. You can check the classes at your local hospital, community center or Red Cross, but if you cannot attend, you can request your instructional video here. (Homemade CPR kits are also excellent shower gifts … they are not as cute as a hooded towel, but they are much more useful.)
- Prepare for the baby, not just for the birth.
In our society, we spend a lot of time focusing on pregnancy and childbirth. Women read books and take classes for months about the birth process. Work is a challenging, beautiful and unique experience; but it is still (hopefully only) one day of your life. Then he has a REAL son to raise for 18 years. In addition to reading books about birth, you should also read about baby care. Study the first chapters of your baby books and highlight what is normal to feed, urinate, defecate and sleep. Ask your partner to read them too, so perhaps one of you remembers them in the state of exhaustion and lack of sleep. Don’t forget to choose a pediatrician either. Once the baby is born, your obstetrician will continue to take care of you, but the baby will be treated by a pediatrician or family doctor.
- be smart with your team
Entering the baby store can be daunting. Too. Many. Elections When I go in search of something to take a shower, I am always intrigued by the amount of new “essential” devices that have appeared on the market in the few years since my son was a baby. When you set up your registry, ask someone who recently had a baby to help you analyze your choices. Also, keep the labels on as many things as possible to see if you really need it. Staying gender neutral in all its colors is a good idea. This is another reason why I connect deliveries of surprise gender: if you keep the things of gender-neutral newborns, you can use them more easily for the little human # 2.
- Go to the cinema
For her last fun outing before her due date, one of my good friends (a first-time mother) decided to go to the zoo. When she told me, I shook my head in dismay. Trust me, you will spend the next 18 years at the zoo, Chick-fil-A and watching cartoons. In the last months of your pregnancy, go to movies (not animated), eat in restaurants with white tablecloths and enjoy sleeping while your pregnant bladder allows it. You will not do these things again for a long time. Your child will be totally worth the loss of these simple pleasures, but take advantage of those last months of freedom.
The last months of pregnancy can be uncomfortable and scary. While preparing for your baby, try to focus on the things that will keep you healthy and safe; and you calm down and relax. The perfect color of the children’s room is fun, but probably not as critical as having a good car seat, knowing CPR or a good night’s sleep.
