But is fertility affected by your weight? It looks like it is. Another study showed that for every 20-pound increase in a man’s weight, there is a 10% increase in the probability of infertility. And this was true when other factors that could influence the results were taken into account, such as the weight of the couple, the age of the man, the consumption of cigarettes, alcohol consumption and exposure to chemical substances.

So what is behind all this? How exactly does weight affect sperm production and fertility? One theory is that sex hormones are altered by changes in weight. Sex hormones are the “fuel” for the motor (testicle) to produce sperm. Obesity increases fat stores and fat converts male hormones (testosterone) into female hormones (estrogens). Too much estrogen in men impairs sperm production. Another theory suggests that the normal temperature difference between the testicles and the body is lost with fat, as it tends to isolate and cause overheating. Similarly, when a man is too thin, the body feels that it is starving, decreasing hormonal production and impairing sperm production and fertility.

So, is our weight the reason why sperm counts have declined in Western countries over the past 50 years? Perhaps. But keep in mind that this problem is preventable. Do your best to eat well and in moderation, sleep well and treat your body like a temple. It is good not only for your own health, but also for the health of your future family.
